Council's tourism arm gets pokie cash - ATEED - the Auckland Council's
standalone tourism, events and economic development body - applied for and
received a $40,887 grant from a pokie machine trust to fund education in
schools about the Volvo Ocean Race. The council-controlled organisation has
been heavily criticised in recent weeks for driving the decision to sponsor V8
Supercar racing at Pukekohe, with more than $10m of ratepayers' money,
withholding financial details from councillors, and for giving the elected
representatives only 48 hours' notice of a vote on the race. The
Auditor-General is investigating.
